  1. Actually sitting there while your car warms up is bad for your car and the environment.

Give the car about 30 seconds to make sure the oil is circulating, and then just drive.

  2. Hey dnm, are you a mechanic? didn’t think so. Also Nathan drive a diesel they reqire a little different winter approch…but then agian, im not a mechanic either so what do I know.

  3. WOW talk about being ungrateful!

Back in the day you’d be lucky to SURVIVE Winter! And traveling was a lifechanging ordeal, where people got to their destination with mental issues and no feet!

  4. Ooh ooh! What can I spend my point on?!

And hey, now, Jackoob, let’s not get too testy there. Yes, dnm, my car is a diesel and an old one at that, so while I respect your environmental concerns they are balanced by the fact that my car actually does not function properly if it isn’t allowed at least a few minutes to gather itself. As in, I can’t shift into certain gears. I honestly would love a car that I could just fire up and drive, because that car would probably also have a working stereo and maybe even one of those compact disc players I’ve heard about. Alas…

  5. A diesel only needs enough time for the glow plugs to heat up.

If shifting is a concern, then you need new gear oil. Your transmission should not be (unbearably) stiff because it’s too cold.

I don’t know what specific car you drive, so I can’t be specific about which gear oil you need, but if you have brass synchros, you’ll need a sulphur free GL5, or a GL4 oil. Get a good synthetic, and you’ll find your transmission shifts FAR better, regardless of how cold it is.

My car runs a synthetic GL4 (It’s a 6-speed), and the gears are a little stiffer, but completely manageable even in -40c.
